Dear Juno,

I heard the news about you. I am glad that you put your child put your child up for adoption. Juno, your choice was right because it was voluntary. You gave away your newborn to a loving mother who wanted a child. I am glad that both parties are happy with your choice.

On the other hand Juno, you could have had an abortion. It was clear you did not feel comfortable having an abortion. On the issue of abortion, I like most Americans have a very gray stance on it. This is because I do not support late trimester abortions (with the exception of life of mother, rape, incest). Late trimester abortions are very gruesome procedure because at that stage the unborn baby is already very developed. I cannot support such heinous act of aborting a very well-developed unborn human in the very late trimesters.

At any rate, Roe v. Wade which legalized abortions in all 50 states. All women should have access to a safe and legal abortion up to the first trimester and states could add necessary reservations. Roe v. Wade ensures that women do not have to resort to “back-alley abortions”. I hold the position of the Democratic Party that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare”. However, If I were a policymaker I would vote against Partial-Birth abortions and late trimester abortions because I believe after those critical periods abortion is not a right.

Juno, you and I can reach across the aisle with Pro-Lifers because we both want to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. To do that, abstinence sex education needs to abolish and states ought to install comprehensive sex education in public schools. A study from the University of Washington found that teens who had “some type of comprehensive sex education were 60 percent less likely to get pregnant or get someone else pregnant”. Implementing comprehensive sex education does dramatically reduce unwanted pregnancy because schools inform teens about safe sex, unlike abstinence-only education. States with abstinence only education are also the states the highest teen pregnancy rates in America according to News Mic. Mathematica Policy Research pointed out abstinence-only programs have had “no impacts on rates of sexual abstinence.”

However, my ideal scenario of safe abortions and access to birth control is nonexistent in most of the country. A few years ago, the Supreme Court case Burwell v. Hobby Lobby allowed employers to deny birth control coverage to its female employees because of personal or religious views. The compromise between pro-choice and pro-life people, I believe, is to ensure health insurance companies provide birth control to its female customers. Abortion is also very restrictive in many red states. According to Bloomberg L.P. in the states of Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming, only one safe legal abortion clinic which I think is insane. Pro-lifers, most conservatives, will scream till their face is blue that they are following the Constitution by using the 10th amendment. They are right… but I do not treat the 10th amendment as Gospel. The 10th amendment is a wonderful tool when it comes to creating laws regarding the minimum wage, environmental regulations, taxes and other policies but not when it comes to abortion. I view that states should not regulate a woman's body. Essentially, I view that having an abortion up to the first trimester is a right and lawmakers need to remove the arbitrary regulations restrict these rights. These regulations on abortion clinics are but not limited to “require abortion facilities to be within a set distance from a hospital, include requirements for the physical plant, such as room size and corridor width” according to The Guttmacher Institute. These unnecessary regulations especially target abortions clinics with the attention to shut them down.

All things considered, abortion is a serious topic and every woman takes it seriously. There are bridges to gap but it seems like the extreme Pro-Life policymakers have taken a different approach to abortion. Many have restricted abortion, therefore, it is very hard to obtain one. I do not want to seem hostile to people who oppose my viewpoint. Equally important, the pro-life movement exists because they view abortion as murdering a potential life. Pro-life president Reagan said, “I've noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.” Judging by his statement, he views whatever is growing inside the women is an innocent defenseless life and it is entitled to live like everyone else. Therefore, I do not want to romanticize the situation you were in. At the end of the day, you had unprotected sex which led to a pregnancy and that was a considerably big mistake. However, I tip my hat to you because you handled the situation maturely for your age. You did not attack your Pro-Life friend protesting outside the abortion clinic which demonstrates you can respect opposing viewpoints. I am glad you do not label Pro-Life people as sexists and bigots for merely holding a different position. I can respect Pro-life people. Pro-lifers view pregnant women as two people. For example in medical school they teach “taking care of a woman that’s pregnant, you have two patients” according to former congressman Ron Paul. In addition, murdering a pregnant woman counts as a double homicide. So in many ways, pro-life people just view abortion and personhood differently. I think that is why I am strongly against late term abortions. Anyway, you the experience and background to counsel young teens of the unintended consequences of unprotected sex. I have respect for you as an individual Juno and I hope you can respect people who disagree with you. I as a moderately pro-choice person, I firmly believe women should have access to birth control and public schools should implement improved sex education public in schools to reduce the number of abortions. Thank you.

Warm Regards,
Sam
